“When our kids are better able to self-regulate they are also better able to relate”

Toxic stress and the body

When a child’s body is habitually in a stressed state or “crisis mode”, not only is cognition altered (impeding attention, memory, and emotional regulation) so too are many of the child’s physiological systems altered, leading to increased risk of chronic disease down the road. Additionally, there is a growing body of evidence that children's emotional regulatory ability is the greatest predictor of adult outcomes.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness training in adults has been shown to significantly reduce the experience of stress, depression and anxiety while simultaneously increasing emotional regulation and sustained attentional control. The application of mindfulness training for children and adolescents is a rapidly growing area of research.
